Case of Minors Philip James Howard. No. 256422
On this 25th day of January, A.D. 1905, at 6 miles NE of Liberty, County of _Gage_ and State of Nebraska, before me, Wm U Watson a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions personally appeared William Jefferson Howard, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to _him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:
I am 42 years of age: my post office address is Liberty Nebraska, Occupation Farmer.
I was born October 25, 1862 in Douglas County, Missouri within a mile of what is now Florilla, Missouri. I have no record to go by but I have understood that my younger brother James Henry had a record of some kind in the old family bible, which was burned. I am the youngest child of Philip James Howard who was in the Army but I don’t know the company or regiment, nor where he enlisted. James Ireland who used to live in Pawnee City, Nebraska was in the same company and also Albert Hansberry. Mother’s maiden name was Winnie Wood. No, I don’t know what year she died. I can just remember her and that is all. I lived with her until I was 18 years old and after that I worked about most the place. I cannot remember a thing about father. I was told that he died in some army hospital but don’t know what he died of though I think it was some kind of chronic diarrhea.
The only living children of Philip James Howard besides myself are: Margaret Woodward, Beatrice, Nebraska, Annis Louisa Fisher, Wymore, Nebraska, James Henry Howard, Burchard, Nebraska but who lives near Tate. There was also a Matilda Cowperthwaite whose husband was Sam Cowperthwaite who now lives in Pawnee City, Nebraska. He is the one who made the mistake on the ages of the children. I don’t know what year she died but he will.
I cannot give the dates of the births of any of the other children nor the date of mother’s death nor her marriage. Mother married William Curtis, Lewiston, Nebraska after father died.
There was one other brother I believe who died very young but I know practically nothing about him nor the other little brother you ask about. Mrs. Woodward being the oldest will know more about that.
I don’t know who can testify as to us children being the children of Philip James Howard unless it is Uncle Joseph Howard who was in the Soldiers Home, Leavenworth, Kansas. I think he left there but don’t know where he went. Uncle Aaron Johnson, Florilla, Missouri if living, will know also. His wife is mother’s sister. She has a brother Will Wood living at the same place.
As to my age being given as March 9, 1859, in the application for the pension made by Cowperthwaite. I think he must have guessed at my age. I don’t know how else he got it.
I don’t know how the date of my birth came to be given as October 24, 1862 in the application filed March 29, 1892, which you showed me. No, I have never regarded the date of my birth as October 24.
I can’t name any one who will know the date of my birth unless it is my sister Margaret Woodward.
I do not care to be present during the further examination of my claim. I have heard this read and understand it and am correctly recorded.
