- In the 1930's, one time in Tazewell, a real gangster "Gus McCog" from Chicago, IL came to town. He knew a man named Pete Dean who was from White Pine, TN. They had worked together in Chicago.
"Pee Jib" Clarence Bunch, a local boy, got together to rob the Citizen's Bank in New Tazewell. The robbery happened at 10:30 a.m. on a Friday morning. Uncle Willie, Link's boy, started shooting at them with a hand gun, and Gus McCog returned the fire by opening up with a machine gun! The robbers got in a car and headed for Knoxville. The police set up a road block at the Powell River Bridge right outside of Maynardville. They had a shoot-out and Gus McGog was injured, and later died from his injuries. A deputy was killed. Pete Dean and "Pee Jib" Bunch were sent to the Penitentiary. (as told by: "Guinea" INGLE)
