Angelina Hodges was a civil war widow. When she married Daniel Allen in 1881, he had already been widowed twice, and brought five children to their marriage. Daniel had fought for the Union from the State of Tennessee. He was hospitalized, then captured. Released from prison at the end of the war, he went down on the Sultana, but managed to survive, in the United States' greatest maritime disaster. Daniel and Angelina had eight children together: Daniel Calvin, Brunetta "Betty", Theodosia Martha, Al David, Maud A., Leaner G., Josephine May and Bruce Marshall. Daniel died in 1901. In about 1915, Angelina and her six surviving children migrated to California, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
