- Most likely born in Maine, which was Mass. in 1776. Grew up in Vershire, VT (land owner). Married Sarah Austin in 1803 in NY. Migrated west to IL (through OH and IN), arriving March 1829 in Morgan Co, IL, then building log house in Cass Co, IL in late 1830s. Father was Jonathan Horham. Mother unknown, but could be Mary Sherburne (b. 1749).
The "Biographical Review" ("Biographical Review of Cass, Schuyler and Brown County, Illinois containing Biographical Sketches of Pioneers and Leading Citizens", Biographical Review Publishing Co, Chicago: 1892) says that Benjamin was born in New York state (which at that time included Vermont) and when a young man he moved to Illinois. "Perrin" ("History of Cass County, Illinois", edited by William Henry Perrin, O.L. Baskin & Co., Historical Publishers, Lakeside Building, Chicago: 1882) says that Benjamin was a native of Maine (which was part of MA). Benjamin Horham was reported found in the 1810 census of Lewis County, New York and in the 1820 census of Dearborn County, Indiana. "After living in Ohio a few years, he continued his way westward, and took up his abode in Dearborn County, Indiana, where he lived until December 1828. At that time he started with his wife and nine children for Illinois, making the removal with ox teams and landing in Cass County the following March."
Migration of Benjamin: 3 boys in 1790 Vershire, VT census- one must be Benj; 1800 (probably with Jonathan (father) in Orford, NH census. A male of his age is with Jonathan); 1803 NY; 1807 Harrisburgh, NY; 1810 Lewis Co, NY (census); July 1813 daughter born in NY?; 1815 OH daughter born ;Aug 7, 1816 he signed 3 deeds as witness in Columbia Twp, Ohio (near Cinci) and a parcel in Cinci city; 1818 Dearborn son born; 1820 Dearborn Co, IN census; 1829 + 1830 Morgan Co, IL; 1830 Morgan Co, IL census; 1835 Morgan Co, IL census; 1840 Cass Co, IL census.
And the Horrom family, they were another group that came in here and settled in rows right next to Hickory Church. It seemed that the father of the bunch was named Benjamin and he lived in the house there just east of Hickory Church, first house after. And then starting there Alvey Horrom was one of the brothers. And Cyrus Horrom and Leeman Horrom and a Hiram Horrom. Hiram Horrom lived back south in the hills somewhere and Leeman Horrom lived down in the valley on what we call the North Road (now called West Gumtown Rd or Gumtown Rd). Per Ivan Baxter Memoirs, 1983, Sangamon State University, Springfield, IL (interview by Marjorie Taylor in 1973).
