ABINGDON, Va. Jacob "Jake" Harrison Lowe, age 83, passed away at his home on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. Jake was born in Washington County, Va., on June 17, 1928, to the late and Almeada Campbell and William McKinley Lowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death two brothers, William McKinley "Mac" Lowe Jr., and Charles Leonard Lowe. Mr. Lowe was a lifelong resident of the area with his family's roots dating back to the region since the 1700's. He graduated Bethel High School and then entered the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II. Following his service in the Navy, he returned to Washington County and enrolled at Emory and Henry College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mr. Lowe taught and coached at Cleveland High School. He attended the University of Virginia, where he received a Master's of Education degree. He also did post-graduate study at North Carolina State University. Jake was Principal of the Washington County Vocational School and was area supervisor of Trade & Industrial Education for the southwest region of Virginia. He was very active in the community where he helped with youth league basketball and Little League baseball, refereed, and was past president of both the Abingdon Little League and Abingdon P.T.A. Mr. Lowe was also a past president of the Kiwanis Club; a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church since 1950 where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Trustee. Mr. Lowe was a tobacco farmer and an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda Burgess Lowe; two sons, Tim Lowe and wife Jane of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Steve Lowe and wife Mary Lynn of Abingdon; one daughter, Cathe Nixon and husband Don of Newnan, Ga.; four grandchildren, Adam Lowe, Jordan Nixon, Andrew Lowe, and T.J. Lowe; two sisters-in-law, Helen Lowe of Columbia, Ill., and Virginia Lowe of Lebanon, Va.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, from 12 to 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Abingdon Baptist Church. Funeral services for Mr. Jake Lowe will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. The burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon. Pallbearers will be the immediate family. Honorary pallbearers will be the Council of Deacons of Abingdon Baptist Church, the men of Abingdon Baptist Church, and the Retired Southwest Virginia Vocational Administrators.
