- The Rev. John Allen Freeman
John Freeman was 25, newly married and filled with “the earnest desire to preach Christ in this new and strange land” when he and his wife, Nancy (Harris) Freeman, made their way to Texas in 1845.
In February 1846, John Freeman and about 10 other men stacked their guns against a tree (Indian trouble persisted into the 1870s) and, along with their wives, sisters and mothers, sat on the ground to hear the first sermon at their new church and to choose its name: Lonesome Dove.
He was ordained at the church in 1846 and was its pastor for 10 years. He also taught school there. In 1857, he and his family traveled by wagon to California, although he returned to Texas several times (by train) to attend Lonesome Dove Baptist Church homecomings.
There have been statements, such as "Trek to TX", that John Allen might have lived at/near Knox Co, TN from roughly 1830-1840. I find a Samuel Freeman in both the 1830 & 1840 Census, but at Blount Co. There were 6 in the family, and I'm guessing if this is the correct Samuel, John Allen was the oldest. It would help if anyone knew if he had what I'm wondering 2 younger bros and a younger sister? Bob Freeman
