Notes |
- Does anyone have an opinion on the below? What was Margaret maiden name and why the two marriage bonds?
Margaret wife of Pinkney Pylant was known as Margaret Renfrow in LCT. On her application for a pension on Pinkney's War of 1812 service she states "that she married under the name of PEGGY GILBERT to said Pinkney Pylant on the TWELFTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER A.D. 1820 by John Burch, a Justice of the Peace of Cumberland Co., N.C. in said Co., there being no legal barrier to such marriage...."
There were 2 marriage bonds made out for this couple:
1. Pinkney Pylant to Peggy Renfrow 12 Sept 1820 WAKE CO, NC
2. Pinkney Pylant to Peggy Gilbert 11 Oct CUMBERLAND CO., NC
On the death cert for their son Felix GG Pylant has Margaret's maiden name RENFROW. Felix's son William V. Pylant gave the info
Could Margaret have married a Mr. Gilbert then Pinkney. Margaret was 19 born in 1801 when she married Pinkney
My great grandmother Rebecca Renfrow Wright and her brother James Renfrow were born in Cumberland CO., NC. Their mother Edith___,Gilbert, Renfrow, Swindle. Came with them to LCT ca. 1833. Edith Swindle is buried in the Pylant Cemetery in LCT.
Could Margaret have been a daughter of James Renfrow & wife 1 unknown, Edith's 2nd husband. She was not Edith and James Renfrow's daughter. Edith, widow of James Gilbert Jr, did not marry James Renfrow until 1814.
I did have Margaret in the James and Ceily Gilbert SR family and sister to James Gilbert JR but now that is not likely.
NOTE: It appears that the Pylant's, Renfrow's and Gilberts lived on the border of Cumberland and Wake CO. NC line.

I have a strange problem about the marriage of Pinkney and Margaret any comments?
LDS records say Pinkney Pylant & Margaret Renfro married 12 Feb 1820 Wake Co., NC. This is wrong.
Margaret states in her application for a widows pension on Pinkney's 1812 War service that they married TWELFTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER 1820 in WAKE CO, N.C. under the name of PEGGY GILBERT
I have a copy of their marriage bond, the date is 11 OCT 1820 CUMBERLAND CO., NC. her name on the bond is Peggy Gilbert. I find no record for a marriage in Wake Co., NC or with her name as Peggy Renfro
Pinkney and Margaret's son Felix G. G. Pylants Tennessee death records has his mothers maiden name Margaret Renfrow.
If her name is Renfrow that could make her the daughter of James Renfrow and 1st unknown wife and half sister to Rebecca (my great-grandmother) and James Renfrow JR.
Could Margaret even though she was only 19 when she married Pinkney have married a unknown Gilbert first (I find no record).
Rebecca and James F. Renfrow mother Edith last name unknown was first married to James Gilbert JR. of Cumberland CO., NC
Julia, I presume you have seen the information on this web site...it states Margaret was Gilbert. Could there be another Pinkney Pylant -- seems I saw something that had another person with that name -- not Pinkney Lee P. Intriguing. Vicki Moore McCarty great-granddaughter of Sarah Isabel Pylant
Thank you for the link to Joy Gallagher's site. She was the one that sent me the info on the pension application. I emailed her several weeks ago with what I found on the death records of son Felix G. G. Pylant. I told her I thought Margaret had been married before. Margaret really does not fit into the family of James Gilbert Sr and wife Ceily. James Gilbert SR did not leave a will but I have his probate records no clue there. I now have to write for probate records for James Renfow or will if there is any. All land deeds for Wake and Cumberland Co., NC are on line free. I have found many deeds for James Renfrow and also James Gilbert but they give no clue.
