Two Very Different William McCarter's
There is alot of confusion between the two William McCarter's. And this mix up is getting posted all over the internet.
1st William McCarter was born 27 Jan 1758 York, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Abraham McCarter and Elizabeth Carson. William McCarter married Isabella Carson. It's his American Revolution Pension Records that have gotten mixed up with the 2nd William McCarter.
2nd William McCarter was born 02 Oct 1756 Barts Township, Lancaster County PA. He was the son of Moses and Catren McCarter. This William McCarter is also believed to be the Father of James McCarter who married Rebecca Ogle and settled in Sevier County, Tennessee.

Perrys & Moses McCarter, Lancaster Co. PA
By Anna Walker April 22, 2008 at 05:56:35
Hello to my fellow McCarter researchers;
Back on 10/9/2000, I posted abstracted info on a Perry will in Lancaster County, PA on this genforum.I stated that Moses McCarter had been appointed as executor of the estate of a Perry woman.I have recently received in the mail the copies of the wills for husband and wife William Perry and Jennet Perry.Moses was appointed as an executor in both wills...
William Perry drew up his will on 6/9/1752.He was of the township of Bart in Lancaster County, PA.The following individuals are listed in the will copy:Beloved son John Perry, Daughter Susanna Perry McBride of IRELAND, son-in-law John Small, John Small's son Matthew, John Small's daughter Agness, son James MCCONNELL Perry, daughter Hester, and beloved wife Jennet.William appointed as sole executors of his estate his trusty friend MOSES MCCARTER and wife Jennet.Witnesses were:John Shennan, John WORK and James WORK.
*Please note:In regard to the family name WORK, "A well-known citizen of Bart Township was named Andrew WORK, Esq.He commanded a company of associates in the French and Indian War.Samuel Ramsey of Bart Township was his lieutenant in 1756 and John MCCARTER of the same township was his ensign."Info is from the book entitled History of Lancaster Couny, PA, published in 1883.
William Perry was deceased before 18/4/1752.His wife's will list that he was deceased.
A couple of months later on 8/4/1752 the will of William's wife Jennet Perry was drawn up.She was of the Bart Township of Lancaster County, PA.Those individuals listed in her will are:Beloved son John Perry, granddaughter Hester WORK and Samuel WORK.She appointed as executors of her estate son John Perry and MOSES MCCARTER.Wintesses to the will were:James Miller, Martha Small and John MCCARTHER (McCarter).
*Please note:Regarding John McCarther (McCarter) in William Perry's will is listed William's son James McConnell Perry. On 3/1/1760 a James Perry and wife Margaret purchased some land in Bart Township, Lancaster County. The land was adjacent to John MCCARTER on the north side of the Lancaster Rd.In the land record info it is listed that John McCarter was 42-years-old (this would place his date of birth around 1719/1720) and John's wife Mary, age 22.I believe the John McCarter of this land record was the brother of Moses McCarter.
*Please note:Here is some additional info from the book on the history of Lancaster County, PA."Green Tree Inn - was probably built after 1740.The land where the inn was built was first owned by George LEONARD, Sr.He purchased 104 acres on 11/6/1739.George sold the land to James McConnell on 11/12/1742.After 1742, it along with other parcels of land became the property of John MCCARTER."I believe this John McCarter was Moses' father. If not his brother, uncle or another relative.John McCarter sold this land to James Perry before 1763.James Perry then sold the land to Thomas and William Smith."The inn is located on the west branch of the Octorara Creek.I have visited this inn and have photos.
In March of 1763 the orphan court of Lancaster County, PA appointed George LEONARD and John MCCARTER, guardians of the children of the late Samuel PAXTON.I printed this info on the genforum back on 9/22/2007.
On 10/1/1758 the Rev. John Cuthbertson, supply pastor of the Middle Octorara Society (church) baptized Moses, son of Samuel PAXTON presented by mother.I wonder if one and the same?
A few months early, the Rev. John Cuthbertson officiated the burial of a McCarter child on 6/15/1758.
Here is some abstracted info from a journal/diary which the Rev. John Cuthbertson kept from 1751 until his death in 1791.On 11/6/1761 - Rode 5 miles to and from McCarters. The info on the Rev. John Cuthbertson comes from the book entitled Register of Marriages and Baptisms performed by Rev. John Cuthbertson (1751 - 1791 - years of his ministry), by S. Helen Fields. At the back of Helen's book, she list the names of the individuals that the Rev. visited and the dates. On 11/6/1761, he visited JOHN MCCARTER.
It is known that the Rev. John Cuthbertson bought a farm from Josiah Kerr which was located two miles from the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. The five miles could be in reference to five miles from the Rev.'s house to John's house, or five miles from the church to John's house.
The Rev. John Cuthbertson passed away on 3/10/1791 and was buried in the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church in Lancaster County, PA.
Lastly, in the 1750 Taxpayers List for Lancaster County there is listed two John McCarters and a Moses McCarter.
I have listed this info because of the family names overlapping and the mention of Ireland in William Perry's will.If anyone would like to share additional info, please do.

Recently it has been found that a Old Family Bible that was published in 1746 Belfast Ireland just might belong to Moses and Catren McCarter of Abbeville District SC.
I have copies of the pages that list all 11 of there children and exact Birthdates.
Now it is not known for a fact if Moses McCarter came from Scotland directly or if he stopped for a short time in Ireland or if he was born here in the Americas in Pennsylvania.
The bible is very old. And was given to a close family friend when a descendant of Moses and Catrens past away back around 1910. He has taken very good care of it and it has remained in his family.
I have copies of the pages with the childrens birthdates but they are photo copies and they aren't the best copies. I hope I will be able to get in touch with this gentleman to get scanned copies.
According to another family Bible from the descendants of Moses and Catren's daughter Catren McCarter Evans her family Bible states that John McCarter married Katherine Bates and it says 1753. With a line through it. We know that couldn't be correct and is a mistake. Because they would of been married by 1749 because there first daughter Anne was born in 1750 in Sadsbury Township Lancaster County PA. It also states that The McCarter's, The Evans, and the Bates all settled in a area outside of Philadelphia. And that Katherine Bates was of Welsh Descent. And we know all three families moved onto South Carolina. Or at least part of them. Because Moses and Catren's daughter Margaret McCarter married Fleming Bates. And their daughter Catren Mccarter married Richard Evans.
Now I have never found a Catren Bates in the Bates Family of Virginia for whom Margaret Mccarter Married into. I have not found anything on Catren to confirm that she was Catren Bates McCarter. Except for this Bible where I believe the person writing it would of been her great granddaughter. So there is a lot years there where errors could of been made. I know I don't have everything clear on my great grandparents. So mistakes could easily be made.
But its a good source to go on and it gives us another piece of the puzzle to work on.
Dates According to the Bible:
Anne McCarter 9 JUN 1750 Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County PA
Catren McCarter 9 OCT 1753 Bart's Township, Lancaster County PA
