John Nelson III was a First Lieutenant In the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. He also fought in the Creek and Seminole Indian War of 1816 under General Andrew Jackson. He moved to Alabama in 1826 and then to Marion County, Mississippi in 1829. He and his family lived near Green's Creek in an area in which the county lines changed frequently. It changed from Marion to Lawrence and finally to Jefferson Davis County. John and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Sherrod, are both buried in Haynes Cemetery near Hathorn, MS.
John's parents were Thomas Nelson (1757-1821) and Elizabeth Walker. Thomas served in the Revolutionary War under Colonel John Twigg.
Thomas' parents were John Nelson I (1690-1765) and Elizabeth Duhart. He was born in Barbados, but later moved to Goose Creek, South Carolina and later to Burke County, Georgia.
John Nelson I parents were John Nelson and Rebecca Kent. He died in 1698 in Barbados where he was a bricklayer.
John and Elizabeth's other children were:
Thomas Walker 1823-1870 married Sidney Ann Tolar
Joel Samuel 1830-1874
Elizabeth 1832-1878 married James Parnell
Eliza 1836- married Mr. Rhodus
Gravesite Details Haynes Cemetery, not Hayes, is no longer there. The land was clear-cut and the small cemetery bulldozed. There is no visible sign that a cemetery was ever there. There is a Nelson and a Haynes monument in nearby Society Hill Cemetery.
