Oscar Y. (probably York) Rheim was the second of four children born to Capt. John E. Rheim (1836-1897), a Confederate soldier, and his wife Susan Jane "Jennie" York (1841-1921). His patenral grandparents were Edward Rheim and his wife Mary Brock, and his maternal grandparents were Rev. Brantley York and his second wife Mary Wells Lineberry.
Oscar was probably born in Alexander or Yancey County, NC. His father had been a professor of mathematics at the York Collegiate Institute, Alexander County (founded by his maternal grandfather, Brantley York), in 1860. By 1880, the family was living in Burnsville, Yancey County, NC. In the 1880s, Capt. Rheim was a professor of Mathematics at Randelman high school (also founded by Rev. Brantley York), and in the 1890s, he became a professor at Weaver College, at Weaverville, near Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina.
Sometime in the 1890s, Oscar moved to Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana. His father died at Weaverville, NC, in 1897, and by 1900 his mother, Susan, and brother, John Emory, were making thier home with him. On 23 April 1895, he had married Gertrude Olive Spore (Sept. 1876-3 Dec. 1933). She was a daughter of Amanzel Spore and his wife Clarissa Clark, and a native of Missouri.
Oscar and Gertrude had at least three sons, Edward Lawrence Rheim (31 July 1897-21 May 1965, Sgt. WW I. m. Lena), Carl Everett Rheim (c. 1901), Howard W. Rheim (c. 1908-15 Sept. 1950, m. Blanche Finlayson).
