Obituary & Service
John Leon Freeman, Sr., Lieutenant Colonel Retired, Tennessee National Guard, age 88, Johnson City, died Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Savannah, Hardin County, TN, he moved to Carter County in 1991. He was a son of the late James R. and Fannie V. Prince Freeman.
Mr. Freeman served in the U.S. Army in WW II. He was the Hardin County Register of Deeds for eight years (1946-1955). He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1977. Mr. Freeman retired from the Tennessee National Guard in 1969 with the rank Lieutenant Colonel, as battalion commander of the 4th Battalion, 117th Infantry. He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Rush Freeman and William Noel Freeman, and one sister, Virginia Dell Freeman Bishop.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife Jean Scapple Freeman, Johnson City, two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. John L. and Katherine Freeman, Jr., Greeneville, TN, William P. and Anne Freeman, Johnson City, one daughter and son-in-law, Marilou and John C. Hildenbrand III, Monroe, LA, six grandchildren, Fran Hildenbrand Spero, Dr. John C. Hildenbrand IV, Natalie Freeman, Lee Freeman, James Freeman and Melissa Freeman, three great-grandchildren, John C. Hildenbrand V, Grayson Hildenbrand and Jacob Spero, six nieces, Martha Freeman O' Hara, Ann Freeman Trejo, Dr. Julia Freeman Guy, Nancy Bishop Glaus, Carole Scapple Cree, and Elizabeth Scapple Kreplin and two nephews, James Rush Freeman III and Dr. Robert Noel Freeman.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Tennessee Army National Guard. Active pallbearers will be James R. Freeman, Dr. John L. Freeman, Jr., William P. Freeman, Lee Alexander Freeman, Dr. Robert N. Freeman, John C. Hildenbrand III, Robert Clayton Anderson, Dr. Johnny C. Hildenbrand IV, and James M. Freeman. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 17 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
