Ann Rutledge Freemon was born ca. 1813 on Black Mountain, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Samuel L. and Mary S. "Polly" Lynch Freemon. Ann died ca. 1897 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee and was buried in the Freemon Cemetery in Leoma, Tennessee.
When Lawrence Co., Tennessee was first settled doctors were scarce, so the women of the different communities took their place. In the Leoma area of the county, Ann Freemon and Elizabeth Hughs were two such women. They would go into the woods and gather herbs and use them to make medicine to care for both family and neighbor when sickness struck. They learned much about the medicinal value of the native plants from the first settlers of the Leoma area, the Indians. Using this newly aquired knowledge in conjunction with their own experiences in treating the various ills and accidents of their world, they were better able to tend their patients.
In the 1880 Lawrence Co., Tennessee census, Ann is 65 and living in the household of Albert Freemon. The is no record that Ann ever married and is listed under her maiden name in the census.
