Sue Barrett Payne Hollingsworth, 84, died peacefully at Covenant Village surrounded by her family on Monday, June 5, 2017.
She was born Jun. 17, 1932, in Cleveland County, to the late Alvin Andrew and Blanche Self Barrett. She was the fourth child of eight.
She claimed Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1942 at the age of 10. As she wrote in her personal testimony "It has been a joy to walk with Christ and to have all the assurance I have needed to lay down at night and know that all was well".
A wife to the Rev. Walter Flay Payne Sr. (Flay), she served faithfully in his three North Carolina pastorates; Faith Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, Glenwood Baptist Church, Glenwood, and Fairview Baptist Church, Gastonia, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, working with church youth and serving in other various lay ministries.
She triumphantly finished the race keeping her eyes focused on her Savior. She now resides in her Father's house. Sue began a successful and fulfilling career in health care, first in nursing in 1954 working in the hospital and subsequently in two physician offices. She began her journey in long-term care administration and management in 1968. In those years, she served as administrator of several facilities and as a Regional Director for Hillhaven Corporation, serving facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. She was elected to serve as President of the North Carolina Nursing Home Association from 1980 to 1981. She retired in 1998.
Along with her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Flay. Married for 45 years he died following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 70.
She married Claude E. Hollingsworth, May 27, 1997, who died after an extended illness, Feb. 15, 2011. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Marvin, James Bryan, AJ, John Barrett and sister-in-law, Iola. As a loving sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she brought joy and love to our lives.
She is survived by her two children, Wanda Payne Briggs and husband, Mike, and Walter Flay Payne Jr. and wife, Julia Lee; grandchildren, Stephanie Lawrence Shryock (John), Emily Payne Spencer (Chris), Joshua Barrett Payne (Laine), Mike Briggs Jr. (Susan) and Mark Briggs (Lori); great-grandchildren, Jack, Nick, Sydney and Kate Shryock, Barrett Spencer, Michael (Jackie), Jeffrey (Lona), Scott (Jessica, daughter, Karys) and Mark Briggs Jr. (Alison, son, Asher). She also leaves behind one brother, Joe Barrett (Jane); and two sisters, Linda Barrett Wright (Dale), Margaret Barrett Price (Kenneth); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Barrett, Mary Francis Barrett, Louise Barrett and many nieces and nephews.
The memories and special moments she etched in our hearts will forever bind us together in the fullness and strength of family. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Covenant Village, Hospice of Gastonia, Visiting Angels and her sister Linda whom provided love and compassion and added dignity to her days. And finally to Tina Brennan who provided care and service to her for many years. For all, it is beyond our words, that we extend our deepest and heartfelt gratitude.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Thursday, June 8, at 2:30 p.m., at First ARP Church, 317 S. Chester St., Gastonia, NC 28052. The family will receive friends in the church chapel from 1 to 2:15 p.m., prior. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park, Garden of Honor.
