Notes |
- Oby Leary grew up north of Risingsun, Ohio, just to the east of Route 23 near Girton Road (also known as County Hwy 21). According to a family history written by Oby's nephew, Oby Bonawit: Oby "left home when 21 years old and was working as a blacksmith when he enlisted in the army at Denver in June 1899. In the Philippines, he engage in expeditions to the Bulacan Mts., and to Biac na Bato. He was discharged in 1902 but spent the rest of his life at Manila. He did engineering, artesian well drilling, and had land and mining interests." An obituary mentions that he also owned and operated a furniture factory. Oby was also, evidently, a hunter as another account by his nephew says that he was going hunting when a chain of events lead to his enlistment in the services. He never saw his parents again after leaving that day. At his death, Oby left behind the cherished legacy of seven children.
