Clyde Floyd Cheek, 88, a lifelong resident of East Ridge, TN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 7, 2010.
Mr. Cheek was a member of Frawley Road Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Director and sang in the choir. He was a Founding Member of East Ridge Baptist Church and Frawley Road Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Gideons International and loved sharing Gods love by handing out Bibles. He was a delegate to the Hamilton County Baptist Executive Board. During WW II, Mr. Cheek enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with Company 1451 at Archville, TN, at the age of 17, where he worked as a surveyor, fire-fighter, and construction worker in the Cherokee Forest. Clyde was instrumental in developing the local chapter of the NACCCA Chapter 148 of Fort Oglethorpe, GA where he served in leadership roles as president, vice-president and treasurer. Mr. Cheek was associated with the Chattanooga Free Press for 38 years, was an employee of Volunteer Ammunition Plant and Flexible Foam Corp. Clyde served as a Auxiliary Policemen for the City of East Ridge, TN. Both he and his wife will always be remembered as being caring, helping, supporting others in the spirit of love.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Daverson Cheek; sister, Azell Coker; children, Ann(Gail) Mize , Nancy (Spencer) Mercer-Defriese, C. Floyd (Carole) Cheek Jr., and Glenn Cheek; grandchildren, Lisa Tester, Greg Mercer, Brent Mercer, Chris Cheek, Shelly Lewis, and Iris Cheek, all residing in the Chattanooga area; great-grandchildren include Tessa Allen, William Mize, Abigail and Emma Tester, McKenna and Caden Mercer, Bethany and Brooke Cheek; great-great-grandchildren are Kira Allen, Vincent Allen and Brianna Mize.Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Floyd and Daisy Carter Cheek; brother, Charles R. Cheek; and grandson, W. C. Mize.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, July 9, 2010 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Frawley Road Baptist Church with Reverend Billy Dean officiating, and visitation one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
