Chancery Court record naming children of James Russell, Jr.
I recently received copies of several documents from a Williamson County, Tennessee Chancery Court file, George A. Russell, administrator and others vs. the heirs of James Russell, who died in Davidson County, Tennessee In May of 1843. The children named in the documents have been previously credited to other Russell families.
The original bill names the widow Elizabeth and children: Joseph T. Russell; Lavinia G. Gallaher, wife of John Gallaher; Mahala D. Russell; Eliza J. Deal, wife of James A. Deal; Lucinda Pitts, wife of Thomas B. Pitts; Sarah C. Russell, a minor; Elizabeth T. Russell, a minor; and Lauretta [spelling hard to deciper] Russell, a minor and George A. Russell who qualified as administrator There are numerous copies of deeds of land purchased by James Russell on or near Pond Creek. Russell is referred to as James Junior in most of the deeds. This does not mean he was the son of The James Russell who married Elizabeth Gower and died in Davidson Co., in 1819. It means he is the younger of two James Russells, though he may well be the son of the elder James Russell. The earliest deed was written in 1816 and the most recent in 1842. Other persons with the surname Russell mentioned in the deeds as adjoining property owners are William Russell, Stephen Russell and Milton W. Russell.
