Davenport - Memorial graveside services for Wallace R. "Walley" Bankson, of Davenport, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary in Davenport. Mr. Bankson passed away Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the Bettendorf Health Care Center. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded.
Wallace Ray Bankson was born on August 8, 1924, in Mystic, Iowa, the son of Miles and Blanche (Coates) Bankson. He was united in marriage to Mildred Skaredik in 1947 in Davenport. They were later divorced.
Wally first served in the U.S. Navy and then in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He spent time in Pearl Harbor and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima where he was injured and was awarded the Purple Heart.
After he completed his military obligations, he was employed at the Rock Island Post Office as a mail handler for 24 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Clemments, of Seattle, Wash., and Delores Bankson, who lives in Germany; three sisters, Betty Thoensen and Margie Schneden, both of Davenport, and Patricia Claussen, of Pekin, Ill.; a brother, Don Bankson, of Mystic; and several nieces and nephews, among them, a very special nephew, Randy Bankson. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marvin, Leroy, and Larry.
