Joseph came to Tennessee from South Carolina between 1800 and 1809. Although Tennessee had been a state since 1796, most of Tennessee in 1800 including Southern Tennessee below Williamson, Davidison, and Wilson counties, was still Indian Land. Joseph was 18 & Elizabeth was 14 when they were married on May 15, 1809.
Joseph Smith was a hard-riding, hard praying Methodist Minister who founded Smith's Chapel in 1810 and later Turkey Creek Methodist Church, and filled the pulpit for a year during the founding of Rock Creek Church, which later became known as Tullahoma Tennessee First Methodist. Joseph was ordered during the Civil War to take an oath of allegiance to the Union. Since this meant that he would have to inform on his relatives, friends, and neighbors, Joseph told his family that he would rather die than take an oath he could not keep. Therefore, he went into hiding in the cold Franklin County woods where he died from exposure.
Joseph made his will out on Sept. 5, 1862 and it was recorded as the will of the deceased Joseph Smith on October 6, 1862. Therefore, Joseph died sometime in between these two dates. Joseph and Elizabeth are buried in Turkey Creek Cemetery in present day Moore Co., TN. Turkey Creek Cemetery was at that time in Franklin Co. as Moore Co., TN had not been estiblished till 1872."
