He was 87. Born in Casey County, he was the son of the late David Jackson and Laura M. Atwood. He was a retired Veterans Affairs Medical Center employee, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Midway United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Atha M. Griffith Atwood; six sons, Garnett (and Polly) Atwood of Florida, David Atwood of California, Jerry (and Margie) Atwood of Midway, Larry (and Carol) Atwood of Alabama, Cecil Atwood of Versailles and George (and Gail) Atwood of Versailles; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Vallis Atwood; four sisters and eight brothers. Funeral services were Nov. 9 at the Atwood Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed Parton. Burial was in Caney Fork Cemetery. Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home in Versailles was in charge of arrangements.
