Colonel Sidney Blythe Garland passed away on November 24, 2010. He was born on September 7, 1922, in Elma, Ia., to Rev. C. Raleigh and Pearl Garland.
Sid is survived by his wife of 62 years, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; his four sons; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and his two brothers.
Sid served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, landing on Okinawa in the first wave on Easter Sunday, 1945. He was awarded a Silver Star for bravery. Following World War II, he was a China Marine and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War to Camp Pendleton, Calif. He retired as a Colonel from the Marine Reserves after 30 years of service.
Sid lived in Paintsville, Ky., for 52 years, where he was active in the Methodist Church and the community. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary with perfect attendance for 37 years. He also established Little League baseball in Paintsville and was a Scout leader.
Sid was a faithful fan of the University of Kentucky attending every home game for football and basketball as long as he was physically able and following their schedule away when possible. He was an Associate Alumnae and awarded special recognition by the K Men's Association.
Sid worked at H.B. Rice Insurance Agency with his brother Bill for many years. Then he became Superintendent of the Paintsville Utilities for 19 years. He helped organize the Kentucky Gas Association and served on the Board of Directors for years. He was elected President of this group for two different terms.
Sid's sense of humor was keen. His puns and jokes were spontaneous in every situation. Sometimes they brought laughs—sometimes groans. His wish was that no one be sad on this day. He lived his life by the Marine Corps motto, "Semper Fi."
Plans for a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge or Paintsville, Ky.
Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of the local arrangements.
