Wayland Taylor Wilhoit, 91, died Saturday in Evans, Ga., after a brief period of declining health.
Mr. Wilhoit was the widower of Adrian Wright Wilhoit and had lived on East Church Street in Greeneville until 2000, when he moved to Georgia to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy (Wilhoit) and Don Willis.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Men's Bible Class.
Mr. Wilhoit was retired from the United States Department of Agriculture, having worked for 44 years at the University of Tennessee Tobacco Experiment Station in Greene County.
He was a research technician and instrumental in tobacco research projects.
His family noted that Mr. Wilhoit "took a great interest in gardening and caring for his lawn, and was known for the beautiful boxes of geraniums he grew each year, as well as for the tomatoes and peppers that he shared with his friends and neighbors."
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, survivors include two grandchildren and their spouses: Lisa (Willis) and Jamie Bessman and Brad and Crickett Willis; a grandson-in-law: Michael O'Shields; six great-grandchildren: Braxton Willis, Tucker Willis, Abi-Grace Willis, Kolbi Willis, Madelyn McAdams, and Bailie Bessman; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Dean and Dorothy Wilhoit and Uel and Helen Wilhoit; a sister: Imogene Sexton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a son of the late F.C. and Bessie (Wagner) Wilhoit and was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Pamela (Willis) O'Shields; a great-grandson: Jacob Bessman; three brothers: Guerney Wilhoit, Percy Wilhoit, and Wilmer Wilhoit; and two sisters: Erlene Wilhoit and Beatrice (Wilhoit) Brower.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
Following visitation, the funeral will be held at 3 o'clock in the funeral home chapel with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. James Mays and the Rev. Mark Clark will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Dean Wilhoit Jr., Bret Wilhoit, Steve Felts, Dr. Dale Teague, Wallace "Pete" Wilhoit, Allen Wilhoit, and Joe Wilhoit.
