Roanoke—The funeral for Alice B. Fielden, 96, of Roanoke and formerly of Tanyard Village Apartments in Rocky Mount, who died Wednesday in Lewis-Gale Hospital, was conducted Saturday, Feb. 25 at Oakey’s Funeral Service in Roanoke by the Rev. John H. Thompson, Jr. Burial was in Evergreen Burial Park with military honors by members of the Naval Reserve and American Legion Post 6 in Rocky Mount. She was believed to be Virginia’s oldest female veteran of World War I. She joined the Navy in 1918 and served as a secretary to the director of communications at Norfolk Naval Yard. She retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1957. She was born in Bristol, Tenn., March 4, 1898, daughter of the late James P. and Alice Bullock Burton, and was a member of Central Christian Church at Bristol where she joined in 1906. Also preceding her in death were her husbands, George W. Anderson and L.L. Fielden, and son, Bill G. Anderson. She attended Bluefield College. She recently moved to Virginia Veterans Care Center. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Patricia and Willian A. Coyne, Jr., of Roanoke and Peggie and William H. (Pete) Foster of Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren, W.P. Coyne, J.M. Coyne, Mary A. Coyne, Margaret C. Shively, Martha C. Brammer, Peter G. Foster, Sally Foster Mullikin and Sarah Foster Bartell; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be made to Virginia Veterans Care Center, Resident Activity Fund, Attention: Marc. C. Bush, Roanoke, Va 24017.
