Dr. Joe M. Lambert of Shelbyville died on June 22, 2012, at the age of 86. He loved life to the fullest. Dr. Lambert was born in Petersburg, Tennessee, on March 15, 1926. He was reared on a farm located in Bledsoe, Tennessee, also known as Poor Grab, and by the locals, as “Po Grab”. It was there that he developed his love for fishing (mostly grabbling or noodling), and farming. His passion for all continued into his adulthood, particularly, farming.
It was in “Po Grab” that he met his childhood sweetheart, Nina Nichols Lambert. They were married on March 30, 1945, during his leave between basic training and his deployment to the European Theatre of Operations where he served in the 1st Infantry Regiment of the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. Upon return from his tour of duty, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and subsequently the University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis.
In January of 1952, he began his practice of dentistry on the third floor of the Gunter Building and later moved his office to North Main Street. He loved his patients and took great pride in the care that he provided them. Dr. Lambert was a leader in the state dental profession having served the Tennessee Board of Dentistry as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. He had also been active in the Tennessee Dental Association as a member of the Council on Education, Council on Dental Health, Council on Insurance, and Council on Annual Sessions, and as chairman of the credentials committee and program committee. Dr. Lambert was a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Examiners, Southern Conference of Dental Deans and Examiners, and the Southern Regional Testing Agency. His professional honors included being a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the recipient of the Fellowship Award from the Tennessee Dental Association, and was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary scholastic fraternity. Though his profession was of paramount importance to him, he was also committed to the welfare of his community.
He was a former member of the Jaycees and a longtime member of the Shelbyville Rotary Club, of which he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Lambert was a Director of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration from 1974 until 1996. During that period, he served as Chairman of the Board for the years 1982, 1983, and 1990. Dr. Lambert also served as a Director of Peoples National Bank of Shelbyville (which later became Dominion Bank of Middle Tennessee) from 1975 until 1990. He was Chairman of the Board from 1986 through 1990.
In his early years, Dr. Lambert was a member of Hannah’s Gap Baptist Church. Once moving to Shelbyville, he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville. There he served as a teacher, department superintendent, and on several church committees. More recently, he was a member of the Edgemont Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents, William C. Lambert and Ruth C. Lambert; a sister, Doris Lambert; and, three brothers, W. Knox Lambert, Leslie H. Lambert and Ralph C. Lambert. Dr. Lambert is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Nina N. Lambert, a son, Joe M. Lambert, Jr., and wife, Sara Jo Lambert, a granddaughter, Sara Beth Lambert Scott and a grandson, Joseph Mack Lambert, III.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bedford County Adult Education Center or Edgemont Baptist Church.
Graveside services, with full military honors, will be 11 AM Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Old Orchard Cemetery in Petersburg. Reverend Bobby McGee will officiate.
Memorial services will be 1 PM Saturday at Edgement Baptist Church.
