Lorene Belle Lewis, age 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017, in Madera, CA. Lorene was born on February 28, 1921, in Marlow, Oklahoma. While living in Marlow, she met the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Charles Dueard “C.D.” Lewis. The couples were married on August 10, 1937, in Oklahoma and spent the following 15 years raising a family of three children there. In 1952, Charles and Lorene moved the family to Madera, California where they spent the remainder of their lives surrounded by family and friends.
Lorene owned and operated “Yosemite Restaurant” for several years. She also worked at the “Snow White Bakery” before becoming the manager of the local “Sears” store where she remained until her retirement in 1986.
Lorene was an avid gardener; she and C.D. lived on a pasture farm they’d built together in Madera for decades, where Lorene designed extensive and brilliant garden spaces filled with beautiful flowers and trees of all kinds. She was also an active member of Fourth Street Church of God (Madera) and an informal prayer group for many years.
Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, Nona and Hubert Rowell of Oklahoma, loving husband, C.D. Lewis of Madera, and her children, Gloria Diane Eschenbaum of Seattle, Washington and Dick Unti of Ben Lomand, CA.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Kay Clements of Madera, Charley D. Lewis and his wife, Janet of Mansville, Arkansas, and Judy Unti of Ben Lomand, CA. Lorene also leaves behind ten grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, all of whom loved “Granny Belle” dearly.
