Shirley Norris Hodge, 71, died on Monday, March 17, 2003, after a valiant battle with rheumatoid arthritis.
A resident of Chattanooga for most of her life, Mrs. Hodge graduated from Girls Preparatory School in 1949. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Chattanooga in 1953. While there she was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, selected Pi Kappa Alpha dream girl and elected Miss University of Chattanooga by her peers.
She was highly respected in the Chattanooga area for her several years as a beloved teacher in the Chattanooga school system and later as head of the kindergarten program at Bright School for 19 years. She taught at Clifton Hills Elementary near Rossville Boulevard and in 1960 started teaching kindergarten at Bright. Subsequently she devoted all of her time to raising her children and caring for her mother.
She was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and its Good News Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband, Lyman W. Hodge; her daughter, Ann H. Morgan; and son-in-law, Larry H. Morgan; and granddaughters, Sarah Jess and Katie Morgan of Newark, Del.; her son, Dr. Hunter W. Norris; and grandsons, Will, Perrin and Zachary of Tullahoma, Tenn.; five nieces; and six nephews.
A burial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Dr. Darryl L. Craft officiating.
Visitation will be at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Brainerd Baptist Church with Dr. Darryl L. Craft and Dr. J. Ralph McIntyre officiating.
