- This Freeman line is extensively covered in the published work, "John Freeman of Norfolk County, VA: His Descendants in North Carolina and Virginia" by Merrill Hill Mosher, published by Heritage Books, Inc.
I have searched the surname FREEMAN vertical file in the TN State Archives & Library, 2012.
Map in Norfolk Co., shows that John owned 200 acres on the Dismal Swamp with Andrew TAYLOR as his next-door neighbor.
Land records found showed a John FREEMAN receiving 50 acres for importation into the country. On 17 Dec 1675, A Certificate for 50 acres of Land is granted Jno Freeman for ye Importation of himself into this Country proved due by his oath. (L. Norfolk Co., VA. OB 1675-1686:11).
John and Hannah were bonded Hanah, an orphan daughter of Wm. WALLIS. Andrew TAYLOR assumed responsibility for Hanah after John and Hannah FREEMAN both died.
John Freeman born about 1650, probably in England. He was in Lower Norfolk, VA (now the City of Chesapeake) as early as Oct. 1673. Married to Hannah ? prior to 1683/4 most likely in Lower Norfolk. John and his wife Hannah both died after May 15, 1711 and before May 18, 1711 in Norfolk Co., VA. He lived near the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, adjoining the Great Dismal Swamp, near the boundary with Nansemond Co., VA.
John Freeman, who patented land in 1676 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA was father of John and William Freeman who moved to NC and also of a son Thomas Freeman, unmentioned by previous researchers, who remained in Norfolk Co., VA.
In MA, a John Freeman did marry Mercy Prence, daughter of Thomas Prence, 4th Governor of the Colony of New Plymouth and granddaughter of William Brewster of the Mayflower, However that John Freeman remained in New England, and left a trail mentioning several children and grandchildren, including a son John and grandson William. John, Jr. son of Major John and Mercy Prence was b Dec 1651 and d 27 Jul 1721. All records in MS.
Perhaps relatives of our crowd-but not one and the same!
