DURHAM - James Randall "Randy" Hines passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, January 16th, 2008. Randy was born and raised in Atlanta, Ga., but fell in love with Durham, where he spent his adult years. He enjoyed the slower pace and charm of small-town life and made many close friends who were to become his North Carolina "family." Randy enjoyed music and photography. He was an accomplished rock and roll guitarist until his poor health made it too painful for him to play. His favorite group was "The Who," and he could match licks with the best.
Randy's last years were plagued by suffering, but he tried to maintain a positive attitude. He loved children and used his own ailments to teach his North Carolina "family" the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
His parents, Lee and Virginia Hines; his son, Danny Hines; and a brother, Phil Hines, preceded Randy in death. Randy worked to turn the death of his son, Danny, into a crusade to educate others on suicide prevention by sharing his sad story with the world.
He was featured as the guest speaker on a "Montel Williams Show" depicting childhood suicide. Randy also went on a cross-country trek, using his "Zebra" foundation to raise awareness and funding for suicide prevention. His declining health issues prevented him from completing the journey, but he never gave up the fight.
Randy is survived by two brothers; Michael Hines of Atlanta, Ga., and Lee Hines of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Sunny Hall of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Linda Southard of Roswell, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a funeral service at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough on Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Ga., on Sunday, January 20, at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704-2175.
The family is being assisted in Hillsborough by Clements Funeral Service Inc.
