- Juanita Ogle Howard
August 24, 1923 - August 11, 2018
(Reba) Juanita Ogle Howard died August 11, 2018, a few days before her 95th birthday. Juanita loved being a Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor. In her words, “I have had a long and wonderful life!” In the words of her late husband, Allen “Cotton” Howard, “Juanita is a beautiful and amazing woman!”
She was so proud of her family, who will forever treasure her and miss her, along with her colorful and witty expressions, actions, stories, and her marathon family gatherings. Everything she did with her family was an “event” that she savored. She loved to cook, and her blackberry cobblers, banana puddings, and 15-course meals are legendary. Whether working or playing, she seemed tireless. In keeping with her vivacious nature and her favorite color red, you might wear a splash of red to her funeral to make the family smile.
Juanita said she was a “tom boy,” growing up as the youngest of 6 children born to Rev. Seldon Ogle and Lydia Blalock Ogle. She was also very feminine and loved the pretty clothes her mother and sister Iva made for her and her dolls. Juanita became a good seamstress herself, making lovely dresses for her daughters and doll clothes for her granddaughters. Juanita met her husband Cotton while riding the bus with him to Pittman Center High School. They married the day he returned from Navy service after World War II.
She loved her church family and was proud to be the church librarian, having begun the library that is named for her. Eventually she “somewhat” embraced the fact that she was the OLDEST living member of Bethel Baptist Church.
She was proud to have been a teacher and always stressed the importance of education to her children. After graduation from Pittman Center High School, she taught from 1943-1946 at Walnut Grove, Williamsburg, Evans Chapel, and Caton’s Chapel. Later she worked at Sevierville schools as a library and teacher assistant until retirement. She was proud to have been a 4-H volunteer leader and mentor, nurturing many children to have self-confidence, to stand up straight with good posture, and to practice public speaking. As a result of her dedication to teaching, she was recently inducted into the Sevier County Educator Hall of Fame.
Juanita was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings Iva Whaley, Verol Lafollette, Sam Ogle, Dana Ogle, Mayford Ogle; son-in-law David T. King.
Survivors include daughters Janet King, Joan (Jerry) Hensley, and Alana Howard; grandchildren Diana King, Shannon (Thomas) Langer, Mark (Kinsey) Hensley, Lydia (Doran) Huskey, Madelyn (Jason) Kidwell; great-grandchildren Haley and Landon Covey, Sienna and Layla Hensley, Quinn and Marshall Huskey; sister-in-law Faye Howard; many beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Juanita’s memory to Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Alvin Davis, 2780 Jones Cove Road, Sevierville, TN 37876 or to a volunteer organization, church, school, or library of your choice.
