In the family Bible, Alexander Finchum's parents are listed as James Madison Finchum and Mary Anderson, but on his death certificate, Lorena Finchum is listed. I believe that Mary's sister was James Madison's first wife and that her name was Matilda Lorena Anderson!
James married twice. One of his sons, Anderson, (b. 1838) married Nancy Jane Gray Baxter (b. 1838) in 1870.Anderson was a farmer and moonshiner in the English Mountain area. He served for the Union, Company D. 8th Regiment Cavalry.

James Madison Finchum
Birth: 1814
Stokes County
North Carolina, USA
Death: 1884
Cocke County
Tennessee, USA
James “Madison” Finchum was born in Stokes (Pitt Co.), N.C. in 1814. His parents came to N.C. from Virginia around 1800. James and other family members were in Cocke County, Tenn. in the 1830s, maybe earlier. Madison married twice, two Anderson sisters, whose family came from South Carolina.
He married Matilda Lorena Anderson in 1833. They had 9 children. Lorena must have been deceased by 1850. She was not listed in the census for that decade.
Madison and Lorena’s children listed in the 1850 census report were: William (15), Harriet (14), Martha (12), Elijah (10), Nancy (8), John (7), Thomas (5), Anderson (3) and Mary (1). Living with the family was Mary Thomas (identity unknown) and her two children.
William Finchum (oldest son) served the Union army in the Civil War (79th Indiana Infantry Regiment). He was a casualty of that war. (Some researchers believe this is the wrong William Finchum. Additional research is needed.)
Harriet Finchum (daughter) married Samuel Fisher in Cocke County. In 1870 (census data), they and their 7 children were living in the English Creek Community of Cocke County. In 1900 (census data) Samuel (67) was living with son Lemuel and family in Franklin County, Tenn. In 1923 (age 89), Samuel died in a home for Confederate soldiers near Nashville and was buried there. Death and burial records for Harriet are lacking. Lemuel died in Oklahoma in 1958. Harriet and Samuel's son Charles lived in Jefferson County (White Pine). Charles' death certificate lists Georgia as the place of his birth, but census data have him living with his family in Cocke County as a youth. Another son, Robert, died in Texas. Son David died in 1942 in Franklin County, Tenn. A daughter, Alice, married twice (W.A. Chapman and J.P.B. Reneau).
Records are not readily available for Martha Finchum and Elijah Finchum.
Nancy Finchum (daughter) married William Lindsey in Jefferson County in 1860. In 1900 (census data), they were still living in Jefferson County. Additional data are not available.
John Filmore Finchum (son) married Nancy Morgan in 1863. They raised a family Jefferson County.
Thomas Finchum (son) married Nancy Jane Beard in 1861. Soon after marriage, he served as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. After the war, he married Mary Ann Oxford in Illinois. Mary Ann died in 1870. Thomas died in Hardin County, Ill. in 1889. Nancy Jane died in 1915 in Jefferson County.
[Madison and Lorena's son Anderson “Ance” Finchum was my great-great grandfather. My family line: Harriet (Finchum) Kyker, my g-grandmother; Essie (Kyker) Clevenger, my grandmother; and Mary (Clevenger) Bryant, my mother. Ance Finchum was widely know for his “moonshine” whiskey, which he made at the base of English Mountain. In recognition of this noterity, the road where Ance lived is named "Shiner Ridge Drive," which appears on all GPS maps. Ance served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, while 2 other brothers divided loyalty between Union and Confederacy. --Gene Bryant]
James Finchum (son) died as an infant.
Mary Finchum (daughter) in 1970 (census data) at age 21 was living with her parents in Cocke County. This is the last available data for her.
After first wife Matilda Lorena Anderson died, Madison married her sister, Mary Anderson, in 1850. They had 2 children, Alexander and Julia Matilda “Tildie.”
Alexander Finchum (son) and his sister Tildie are buried in the Morris Cemetery off Cosby Road just south of Newport.
[Tildie Finchum, who married James Allen, was my great grandmother. My family line: Dollie (Allen) Bryant, my grandmother; and James Bryant, my father. Dollie’s name at birth was Sophronia Frances. Dollie had an aunt named Sophronia and another named Frances, but “Dollie” was a common nickname for young women in the Finchum family. The name came form Dollie Madison, wife of President James Madison, the namesake of James Madison Finchum. --Gene Bryant]
Madison’s brother, William Finchum Jr., married Elizabeth “Betsy” Frazier in Cocke County. They may have moved to Franklin County, Tenn. Three of their sons, Polk Finchum, John Finchum and William Finchum, died in Franklin County.
