- Jackson Family History

In 1765 three brothers immigrated from North Ireland to South Carolina near the border of North Carolina. Andrew Jackson Sr. was already married and rather soon in America had a son, Andrew Jackson Jr. (Old Hickory) who became President of the United States. One of the other brothers married there and had a son Ezekiah who later moved to Cumberland County, Kentucky. Ezekiah married there, had a son in 1812 and named him Oliver Ivins Jackson. Around 1820 Ezekiah Jackson moved his family to Clay County (then Clinton County), Missouri and all were already faithful members of the church of Christ having been converted in Kentucky by Barton W. Stone - great restoration preacher.
In 1735 a German couple named Schmidt immigrated from their native land to Virginia and later there had one son, George, who changed the name to Smith. He fought in the Revolutionary War from Virginia, married and moved with his family including a son to Cumberland County, Kentucky. George Smith lived there until his death on March 20, 1804. The Smith family also converted by Barton W. Stone became active members of the Church of Christ there. His son later became known in the Restoration Movement as Raccoon John Smith.
One of the Smith daughters married a Mr. Livingston and had several children. After becoming a widow she moved her family to Clay County, Missouri where her son, John Livingston, born in Kentucky married young Susan Collins. They built the first house in what is now Plattsburg, Missouri and later he helped in laying out the town. He died there in 1867 and is buried in Plattsburg Cemetery. A daughter, Mary Ann Livingston, was born there December 14, 1818.
August 22, 1833, Oliver Ivins Jackson married this Mary Ann Livingston with the ceremony read by John Biggerstaff who had just been appointed as the first Justice of the Peace for that county and the handwritten license is filed in the Plattsburg Courthouse vault. It might have been the first marraige in the county. John Biggerstaff had married a daughter of Ezekiah Jackson and thus was a brother-in-law of Oliver Ivins Jackson.
Oliver Ivins brother, William Riley Jackson, had gone to the California gold rush in 1849. In about 1852 he left California and settled in Fannin County, Texas. In about 1853 he influenced Oliver Ivins to join him in Texas. The Jackson family at that time had 9 children: Didama Melissa, Thomas Collins, Carlton, John Joseph, William Riley, Duke Young, Susan Jane, James Oliver, and Delila Ann. In Texas three more children were born to them: Robert Andrew (born 1855), Sara Elizabeth, and Parmelia Francis. Our great grandfather, Oliver Ivins Jackson was the first born of Robert Andrew on July 31, 1880.
Samuel G. Biggerstaff, brother of John Biggerstaff, had also immigrated to Missouri from Kentucky and later his son, G. W. Biggerstaff married Didama who was the oldest child of Oliver Ivins Jackson. The G. W. Biggerstaff family joined the Oliver Jackson Family in moving to Texas and they settled on adjoining farms in Fannin County building a family cemetery on the Biggerstaff farm where most of these pioneers are buried. Ezekiah Jackson and wife are also buried there. Samuel Biggerstaff is buried in the city cemetary in Plattsburg along with his wife.
In 1843 the log church in Missouri had listed as elders: John biggerstaff and Oliver Ivins Jackson. Upon moving to Texas they built a church building nearby on what was called Jackson Creek where school was held in the building during the week. Your great grandfather remembered attending worship there and sitting on the split log seats. This church later became the Gober, Texas Church of Christ.
