Obituary
Mrs. Margaret Miller Staley was born June 7th, 1800 in Mercer Co. Pennsylvania and in the month of February 1822 was married in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, to Jacob Staley with whom she lived about 45 years, he having departed this life the 22d of May, 1867. They lived in Crawford county, Ohio, from 1844 to 1865, the fall of which year they moved to Tama county settling near Toledo. Mrs. Staley was the mother of twelve children, nine sons and three daughters. Two daughters and five sons are yet living. Only one daughter was present at the funeral, Mrs. Frank Ramsdell with whom she has made her home and who cared for her in her last alertness. She had four sons in the Union army, two of whom laid down their lives for their country. She also leaves 21 grand and 21 great grand children, three of the latter being married. The latter part of the winter and early spring she went as far as Colorado visiting most of them and had a few weeks of comparative good health after making the long journey. Her ninetieth birthday was celebrated the 7th of June by her friends. Yet she was failing gradually from the effects of the prevailing influence. But at last closed out her long and useful life on the evening of the fourth of July. It making her 90th anniversary of our American Independence.
Mother Staley had been religiously trained from childhood. Her parents being members of the Presbyterian church, and for the past 65 years she was a faithful member of the same. She and her husband were among the charter members of the Presbyterian church of Toledo, Iowa, over 33 years ago, only five of that company yet survive. It is not strange that she was ready and willing to depart and be with Christ. Her faith had almost become vision, hence the appropriateness of the scriptures read as also the text used at her funeral services by her pastor Dr. J. Irwin Smith from the 91st Psalm, text 16th verse, "with long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation." Which he showed was for those that literally lodged or dwelt with God as they moved through this life. And only such are satisfied with life, a life that shows itself in character and exalted impulses reaching on to the life that is to come.
The church was filled to overflowing, many of whom were old settlers. Her remains were laid by the side of her companion in Woodlawn cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. Four generations were represented at the funeral, four of the elderly neighbors were the bearers: W. Sabin, D. Rosenberger, C. Ramsdell and J. Quin. The casket and floral preparations were in keeping with her chaste and beautiful life. It is fitting to close this sketch with the following: Servant of God, Well Done! Thy glorious warfare's past; The battle's fought, the race is won; and thou art crowned at last.
