MARCHETA GREGORY MEMORIAM
Marcheta Betty Jane Gregory
September 7, 1926 - February 26, 2009
My Momma was my friend, my confidant, and my source of talent, morals and principals. As I go through my life, she will always be watching, guiding and feeling me.
We lost our Mother on Thursday, February 26, 2009 and the realization is still hard to grasp. Not being able to hear her voice, have her share favorite soap opera, Days of our Lives and discuss the latest ER and Law and Order television programs is unthinkable.
Our Mother was known in Orange County, particularly the Garden Grove area, as "The Cake Lady" from her years as owner/operator/decorator of Cakes by Marcheta. I am sure when speaking to your friends or acquaintances, you will find at least one, including yourself who has had or tasted a birthday, baby shower, wedding, anniversary or other special occasion cake made by Mom. For years, she operated Linda's Bakery with Cakes by Marcheta located at Euclid and 17th Street in Garden Grove. Mom sponsored a contestant for the Strawberry Festival Queen and made wonderful strawberry whipped cream cakes during festival time. For many years, Mom baked and decorated the birthday cakes for Atlantis Park in Garden Grove and made the small lemon meringue tarts, little cheesecakes and the Jungle Club donuts for the "Citrus House" on Main Street and the "I Presume Stand" in Jungle Land at the Disneyland amusement park.
Mom moved her business to Garden Grove Boulevard and West Street in Garden Grove, where she specialized in cakes and continued the Atlantis Park and Disneyland accounts. After several years, she moved the business across the street from her home at Haster Street and Chapman Avenue in Garden Grove. She sold her business when she grew too tired to continue the hard work lifting the 100-pound sacks of flour, sugar, etc... She was a very strong women of German stock, but the hard work was getting the best of her.
Dad, Donald and granddaughter Jill Gregory predecease our Mother. Mom was blessed with her five children, son, Jack Gregory, his wife Carole and grandchildren Kimberlee and Jill, Kimberlee's husband John and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Braedon and Britnee, all from Northern California; daughter, Melanie Anne Birdsong and husband, Eddie; granddaughter, Tyra Sutton and great-grandchildren, Micah, Brecca, Noah and Bria. Grandson, Joshua Birdsong and his wife Jennifer and great grandchildren, Justice, Jaeleigh and Jaeda. Grandson Jacob Birdsong, wife Rosann and great grandchildren, Anisa and Jalia. Grandson Jedidiah Birdsong, wife Jennifer and great grandchildren, Lauren and Jillian. Grandsons Josiah Birdsong and Joel Birdsong, all from Kansas City, MO, daughter, Tamara Davidson and husband, Jim from Mountain Home, Idaho. Daughter, Heather Valenzuela, husband Anthony and grandchildren, Gino and Vito, from Garden Grove, CA. Daughter, Lisa Phillips and husband, Tom from El Dorado Springs, MO. A special one, like a son to Mom, Mark Alan "Lance" McKnight, also survives her. Thank you Mark for coming back into our lives and spending these last few months with Mom.
My heartfelt thanks and love are for our baby sister, Heather, her husband, Anthony and their sons, our nephews, Gino and Vito Valenzuela. There is nothing in the world that could show you how grateful we are that you were so strong and capable in taking care of Mom. We love and miss you and pray that one day we can stand together as family and share the wonderful love instilled in us by our Mother.
I love you Momma! I hope you and Daddy enjoy watching golf and football together again! May you have a bounty of Babcock peaches, raspberries, mango, almonds and coconut to savor!
Your daughter,
Lisa Lynn
