"Abraham ALEXANDER Col.: born on 9 Dec 1717/18 in Cecil Co., Md; married about 1749 in Mecklenburg Co., NC; died on 23 Apr 1786 in Charlotte Town, Mecklenburg Co., NC This is the third date I have seen for his death. My great aunts quote his tombstone in the Sugar Creek Pres. Church as saying 'Abraham Alexander died April 3rd 1786 Aged 68 years' "let me die the death of the righteous And let my last end be like his."
I haven't seen the tombstone because that cemetery at the Sugar Creek Pres. Church isn't open to the public. It seems the drug dealers lurk there. The World Family Tree Vol. 2 Tree #0071 (by the Charlotte Museum of
History) agrees with this date. However the book Mecklenburg the Life & Times... gives his date of death as
April 28, 1886. Researcher:Alice Campbell (acampbell@nconline.com)

Abraham Alexander lived in the SUGAR CREEK District near the town of Charlotte. According to his tombstone inscription in the Sugar Creek graveyard (no2) he died in 1786,and therefore his name does not appear on the 1790 census, but the census of that year does show Elias Alexander, Jr. (his son) married and with two children, living in that community in 1790, also Dorcas the widow of Abraham, with four sons and two daughters still living at home.

"The following is about Abraham s/o Elias and Sophia Alexander. (Abraham migrated from MD to the Mount Holly Section of N.C. in 1754 with his wife Dorcas, and son Isaac, then 3 yrs. old with his brother Arthur and son Ezra, age 14.
Abraham became a prominent citizen of the Hopewell, Anson area, later to become Mecklenburg Co., where he lived and died. By 1765, he was a Commissioner of Mecklenburg Co. (From "History of Mecklenburg Co., N.C.,
and the City of Charlotte" by D. A. Thompkins, Vol. I).
In 1769, he was elected to the Assembly, the governing of NC. There are no early land records as the courthouse burned, but by 1765, Abraham owned 600 acres and by 1777 he owned 1,507 acres. Abraham was a member of the Colonial General Assembly from 1769 to 1777. He was a trustee of both Liberty Hall College and Queen's College, and also a trustee for the establishment of the City of Charlotte as the county seat of Mecklenburg Co. He was one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, originally the Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church. The graveyard of the church has lots of tombstones with the name Alexander on them. Abraham was the chairman to the Commitee that first signed a declaration of freedom from England. (Olive ALEXANDER)
