Notes |
- Our Wallace Joshaway Teague is not listed on the estate settlement and distribution of funds to the children of Nancy, widow of deceased Joshua in their share of their grandfather-Abner's estate. He had not yet moved to TN-but lived in Spartanburg Co., SC. If not a son, he is a relative of this line in some fashion based on DNA.
The 96th Dist. of SC. It did take in both of what is now Laurens and Newberry Counties.
Still looking for possible parents. I feel confident that he is a descendant of Joshua Israel Teague and Dorothy Gant TEAGUE, but just don't know exactly where he fits in. I know that he is related to the Laurens Co., SC TEAGUEs as he matches with the male DNA.
We have Y-DNA evidence that Wallace is a descendant of Edward TEAGUE b 1660 of Bristol, England that traveled to Cecil Co., MD.
The TEAGUE family is supposedly of Celtic Origin and lived in England, Scotland, and Ireland for many centuries. Some of their descendants still live there. The Teague Coat of Arms was granted by the King of England probably 1200-1250 A.D.
The Teague family migrated from England to Fredrick Co., VA about 1720-1728.
They moved from Virginia to Orange Co., NC about 1740-1750. From there, they spread to other parts of NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TN, MO, TX, CA, and other parts of the United States.
There is one line that is suspect to connect to William b abt 1789>Walter TEAGUE b 1813 m Susannah>Henry Harrison TEAGUE b 1841, Lovena TEAGUE b 1846, John L. TEAGUE b 1850, Marsetta TEAGUE b 1853, James H. TEAGUE b 1858, Marion Charles TEAGUE b 1864. A descendant of this line is Ella Jo KELLER e-mail: ejkeller@mindspring.com
Spartanburg County, South Carolina (just north of Laurens Co.) 1850 Census: There is a W. Thomas (Teague), hireling, age 29, and his wife, Nancy, age 30. It shows this couple had the following children:
1. Joshua, born about 1841, South Carolina.
2. Sarah, born about 1843, South Carolina.
3. William, born about 1845, South Carolina.
4. Mary, born about 1847, South Carolina.
5. Almay (male), born about 1849, South Carolina.
1850 United States Federal Census
Name: W Thomas
Age: 29
Birth Year: abt 1821
Home in 1850: Spartanburg, South Carolina
Gender: Male
Family Number: 2222
W Thomas 29
Nancy Thomas 30
Joshua Thomas 9
Sarah Thomas 7
William Thomas 5
Mary Thomas 3
Almay Thomas 1
This is incorrectly recorded and should be Wallace TEAGUE, Nancy's father was listed nearby and the census taker must have assumed the name of THOMAS rather than TEAGUE as they were living beside of Nancy's parents, the THOMAS'.
From the will of William THOMAS, Sr. in Spartanburg Co., SC: “I do will and bequeath unto the bodily heirs of Nancy Teague dead Three Hundred and seventy dollars to be paid to them severally as they become of age by W. Jasper Thomas & Elizabith Thomas and the balance of their part of the estate being thirty dollars I have bild back to make good a claim which I had against Wallis Teague for a wagon which I loaned him and he failed to return.” Spartanburg County, Carolina dated 28 December 1862, probated 31 March 1863.
After this, he is found in 1858 in Greene Co, TN with a marriage to Rebekah Cutshall, who was the wife of John Cutshall, Jr. before John was murdered in 1854.
Rebecca is living with her parents in the 9th division East District of Greene Co., TN in the 1850 Census. Taken on the 29th day of August.
I have added several TEAGUE children found living among different families in the 1860 Greene Co., TN who were all born in SC. Letha is listed as born in TN, but she is listed as only being 2, and would have born in TN. All of these children are listed in District 9, which is where Rebecca's parents were living in the 1850 Census. I believe that after Nancy died, her children were scattered amongst the neighbors there in Greene Co., TN.
[An examination of the 1860 Census of Greene County, Tennessee shows various stray Teague children were living in District 9: William Teague, born about 1845, South Carolina, living in the household of Eph Link;
Almarene Teague, born about 1850, South Carolina, living in the household of Humphy Wells;
Nancy A. Teague, born about 1848, South Carolina, living in the household of Ham M. Rector;
Letha C. Teague, born about 1858, Tennessee, living in the household of John and Sarah Nelson.
Jack Teague, which individual couldn’t be located in the 1860 Census. Later censuses of Greene County, Tennessee (1870, 1880, 1900) show a Jackson (or Jack) Teague, born about 1852, evidently in South Carolina.
As stated above, Letha C. Teague, born about 1858, Tennessee was living in the household of John and Sarah Nelson [see Document 40]. The marriage records of Greene County, Tennessee indicate that John Nelson and Sarah Teague were married in that county 21 March 1858 [see Document 67]. As such, it seems that Sarah Teague, wife of John Nelson, can be added to the list of stray Teague children who occur in the records of Greene County, Tennessee in the period, 1858-1870.
The 1860 Census indicates that Sarah, wife of John Nelson, was born about 1845, in South Carolina. In 1858 (the year of Wallace Teague’s marriage to Rebecca Dickson), William Teague, then aged 13, the eldest of the Teague stray children, was bound in Greene County, Tennessee to serve Ephraim Link until aged 21 years. Jacob Harris is listed as the security. In 1857, the previous year, the same Jacob Harris was appointed guardian for George (youngest son of John CUTSHALL, Sr.) and David, William, and Henry Cutshall, the 3 children of Wallace Teague’s future wife, Rebecca Dickson.
Born c1822, SC; died after Oct 1874, TN. Married 1st Nancy, who was born c1825, SC and 2nd on June 10, 1858, Greene Co., TN to Mrs. Rebecca (DICKSON) CUTSHALL, who was born c 1835, NC; died Oct. 11, 1884, buried Zion Hill Cemetery, Sevier Co., TN; widow of John CUTSHALL, Jr; daughter of David and Elizabeth STEEMAN DICKSON.
My family information is that he was called "Joshua" or "Joshaway" TEAGUE, but court records list his given name as Wallace "TEAGUE". (Sherry S. Finchum) He likely had a son who was killed in the Civil War by the name of Joshua. This Joshua Tessaway TEAGUE was married to a Sopia DICKSON, sister to Rebecca! He was also listed as born in SC.
The name is recorded in Belle INGLE SUFFRIDGE's records as: TIGUE.
The family is not clearly listed on the 1860 Census in TN, but is likely them, especially noting the CUTSHORT-CUTSHALL child named Henry:

*Newton Teague 17 living in Blount Co in 1870. I wonder if this is the same Newton who was 6 and enumerated with Wallace and Rebecca in 1860? Then I found a Samuel N. Teague married to Rebecca Delozier March 8, 1871 in Blount Co. I wonder if there is a connection there (perhaps Samuel Newton Teague)?

The following information from TEAGUE, TX family history at B-RI Railroad & Historical Museum.
"Wallace Teague
(c1822-1871) He was born Wallace Alexander: changed his and his children's surname to his step-father's name: TEAGUE. Wallace's father was abusive and brutal, while his step-father was more of a father than his natural father. It has been said : "Martha DEAN married Wallace Alexander and had children: William Marion, James Albert, and Jackson". Wallace changed his name to Wallace Teague." (This story is not accurate regarding Wallace's children from both his first and second wives as they are related by DNA to Edward TEAGUE of Cecil Co., MD- Sherry S. Finchum) (He could certainly have been raised by an ALEXANDER man.)
Also from these notes, they list children: George and Mary, but they are not found in the Greene Co., TN Census records. Mary likely married or died (There is a Mary THOMAS listed as a child of Nancy and William THOMAS in Spartanburg, SC), therefore very hard to trace, and there is no George found in SC or in TN census records.
From Cocke Co., TN Heritage Book: "Family oral history relates that there were 2 brothers named Jack and Bill ALEXANDER. The ALEXANDER man and wife died, when these boys were young. They had no other relatives and were taken in and raised by a family by the name of TEAGUE. (These would be Wallace's oldest boys.) Again, ALEXANDER as a biological father is not true as DNA proves them to be TEAGUEs
From a Cocke Co., TN TEAGUE descendant: "Anyway this is the story Daddy told me. A set of parents died in a flu epidemic, leaving two boys. A Teague family took them in, and the boys assumed the name of Teague." DNA disprovesas they are biologically related to all the relatives of Wallace Teague!
From William H. Teague, son of James A. Alexander (or Teague). He said James had two brothers (no names). Their mother married a TEAGUE after ALEXANDER died and they moved from Spartanburg to Greeneville, Greene Co., Tennessee. The boys became known as "the Teague boys." James and his two brothers decided to keep and use the name of TEAGUE because the oldest brother said the Teague man had been better to them than their father. DNA disproves that Alexander was their father. All of these male children are biologically through Y-DNA related to the Teagues.
Teague Family Resource Center, a Teague site located in England. One researcher: Scotty Teague
scottea123@aol.com had a blurb about 2 brothers being taken in by a Teague family around 1890 in Catawba or Alexander Co., N.C. The mother was full Cherokee. Parents died in flu epidemic. There was no one to take care of the boys. Being half-breed, had a hard time. Took off walking. He has possession of the 100 year old family Bible.
TEAGUE Family Magazine: In Vol.III, p. 109, there was an Annie Alexander and a William Alexander on p. 120. In Vol. II, there was an Atwell Alexander, a Corine Alexander, two Marianna Alexanders, all on p. 131. There was a J. Will Alexander on p. 130-131.
