HODGES, WILLIAM "BILL" HALE SR. - 92, Johnson City, entered into rest Friday, January 24, 2014, at Christian Care Center, Johnson City, TN. Mr. Hodges was born in Middlesboro, KY, spent many years in Knoxville, TN, and a resident of Johnson City for 45 years.
He was a son of the late James Shields Hodges and Ruth Hale Hodges; and was also preceded in death by his wife, Aniece Kirby Hodges; one brother, James Shields Hodges, Jr.; and one sister, Virginia Hodges Whetsel.
Bill was a devoted, loving family man who was fiercely independent. He was known for his irascible sense of humor and charm. Bill enjoyed golf, a fine whiskey or wine, and a good laugh. He was the patriarch of the family and truly cherished his family and friends. Bill served during World War II in the Navy and was the quartermaster when his ship, the U.S.S. Kendrick was torpedoed. During the war Bill married his high school sweetheart, Aniece Kirby. As a self-made, disciplined man he started his own company and later grew in the executive ranks at General Shale and finally president of Delta Macon. Being in the brick business Bill was known for his toughness, integrity and dependability along with his industry knowledge.
Mr. Hodges leaves to cherish his memory two sons, William Hale Hodges, Jr. and spouse Carlene Graen Hodges, Lexington, KY, Charles Hodges, Sr. and spouse Lynn Burleson Hodges, Charlotte, NC; one daughter, Lucy Hodges Brennan and spouse Jim Brennan, Doylestown, PA; grandchildren, Gregory Hale Hodges and wife Constance, and their son Cameron, Greenville, SC, Drs. Matthew Hodges, and wife Anoopa, their children Madeline, Emily and Jacob, Dayton, OH, Charles Hodges and wife, Elizabeth, Santa Monica, CA, William Hodges and wife Katie, Charlotte, NC, Katherine Brennan, Miami, FL, and Margaret Brennan, Washington, DC.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care provided by the nurses and medical staff of Johnson City Medical Center. The family will greet guests from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services, Johnson City, TN. Entombment services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, TN. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Those who prefer memorials, in lieu of flowers, may make donations to Haven of Mercy Ministries, P.O.
