Riley Jenkins Roberts was the son of James S. Roberts and Nancy Wakefield. His family moved to Franklin County, Indiana when he was a young boy. They later moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee where he married Matilda Burris in 1834. Riley brought his family to Arkansas during the 1850s and married his second wife, Elizabeth O'Neal Winkle in Independence County, Arkansas in 1858. Family records suggest that he was buried in an unmarked grave in Marcella Cemetery.
Riley was the father of at least thirteen children by his first wife:

6) Richard DeKalb Roberts (1842-1918), married Louisa Jane Owings

8) Riley Lexington Roberts (1845-1925), married Martha C. Wrather
9) Matilda Evaline Roberts (1848-1921), mother of two illegitimate sons and later married John Cyrus Monday
